Nicholas Rowe – I Built It Myself (2022)

Often compared to Wilco and Jason Isbell, Nicholas Rowe began as a rocker but ended up with a folk singer’s soothing tones. After hearing Bob Dylan’s album Blood On The Tracks, the self-proclaimed “narcissist crippled with self-doubt” chose to share his vulnerabilities with the melodious intimacy of indie-folk artists. Along with The Other Side Reviews (that’s us), singer-songwriter Rowe is receiving acclaim from Sinusoidal Music, Turtle Tempo, The Music Mermaid and various playlists. The latest addition to his discography is the single ‘I Built It Myself’.

Following the single ‘I Wish That I Could Sing It For You’, US-based Rowe adopts a robust, full-bodied sound with ‘I Built It Myself’; however, there is a tender vulnerability underlying the bold melody. The acoustic guitar brings a touch of delicacy into the tune allowing Rowe to expose his emotional fragility with a sophisticated elegance.

The second single off his new album The Circle Remains Unbroken, ‘I Built It Myself’ was recorded at the National Audio Preservation Society Studio in Newark, Ohio. Interestingly enough, while ‘I Built It Myself’ has the full band arrangement, a heartfelt, almost heart-breaking sensitivity shines through interwoven into the single’s sonic tapestry. Rowe, once again, twists the flow of the melody to include an innocence, sincerity, sentimentality and brash honesty in his lyrics. It is this matching of brash and delicate, valiant and tender, open and reserved that makes Rowe’s songs intriguing.

So, what can I say about Nicholas Rowe and his new single ‘I Built It Myself’? Truthfully, it is nothing other than the beauty and charm of Nicholas Rowe himself. His dulcet vocals weave elegantly through the mellifluous soundscape whisking you off your feet and carrying you through a flickering whirl of lights. Using the intimacy of Jeff Buckley with the power of Bob Dylan, Rowe is one to watch in this shimmering pool of iconic artists.
