yunglynx (ft. ADHD) – where are you now? (2022)

The brainchild of Sarah Maynard, yunglynx is a musical project that takes your soul and sends it soaring off on a sonic cloud. Using music as an intensely intimate catharsis, yunglynx aims to put as much of herself as possible into her sound – and she’s taking you along for the ride. Featured on blogs like Indie Dock Music Blog, Headbangers News, Find No Enemy, FV Music Blog and various playlists, yunglynx is building a fanbase on a global scale. The latest addition to the critically acclaimed discography is ‘where are you now?’

A collaborative effort between yunglynx and producer/musician Daniel Dobrowski (performing under the moniker ADHD), ‘where are you now?’ follows the well-received ‘feeling (don’t owe any reason)’. As I mentioned, yunglynx uses music as a catharsis, and the new single eloquently expresses personal struggles with mental health. She explains that “…the inspiration for this song [‘where are you now?’] came from personal experiences and emotions. As individuals who struggle with the battles of mental health, we channel everything into our music.”

Previously penned as a solo song to illustrate the starkness of being “…lost and confused about a relationship suddenly ending…”, yunglynx chose to bring the song to life with ADHD after he became emotional when listening to a clip of the song. Recorded in both of their home studios, ‘where are you now?’ combines the haziness of dream pop with the piercing power of emo-rock and underlying pop-rock instrumentation. Utterly obscure and unique, the pair create a haunting sound within a kaleidoscopic soundscape.

One element I find particularly intriguing is the interplay between synthetic and organic in ‘where are you now?’. An acoustic guitar threads itself through a synth-driven melody sending your head spinning. While it can be quite overwhelming, I believe this is the intention. Touching on the confusion, frustration and anxiety felt when faced with an abrupt ending of a relationship, the melodic arrangement is a representation of this uncertain state.

Sentimental, sincere and anthemic, yunglynx and ADHD take you on a crazy trip in ‘where are you now?’.
