One and a half dog – Catch 22 (2022)

Influenced by a plethora of sounds spanning about five decades, Norway-based One and a half dog brings both old-school flairs to contemporary rock in their unique music. Founded, with the current line-up, in 2017, the fivesome has honed their sound resulting in a classic rock sound. Yet, while there is a strong “rock-ness” to their heavy content, tinges of blues-rock and new wave are sprinkled atop the melodies. The latest addition to their discography is the single ‘Catch 22’.

Not wanting to be defined, One and a half dog has a genre-defying sound; however, they share that “most listeners would probably categorise the band’s sound as ‘new wave of classic rock’”. Do I agree? Well, yes and no. It is true that the majority of their work has a bold rock sound with lighter new wave sentiments woven through and this is evident in the new track ‘Catch 22’. Yet, while this “new wave classic rock” is evident, the song is a rollercoaster of sounds taking you on an insane ride through metal, hard rock, progressive rock and even softer post-punk.

As I said, the band does not wish to be defined but the one element that is retained is that heaviness, hardness and “in your face” brashness of old-school rock. The first track of 2022, ‘Catch 22’ combines pounding drums, dynamic guitars and rich vocals. A slightly soothing tone can be heard as this gentleness is woven through the sonic tapestry. Yet, a scorching guitar solo fully expresses their heavy, harsh and gritty nature. In fact, the combination of haunting roughness and intoxicating smoothness brings an enigmatic quality to ‘Catch 22’.

Sincere and sentimental, but abrupt and “in your face”, One and a half dog slither in your ear and sends chills down your spine with ‘Catch 22’.
