Milly Mason – Our Autumn Day (2022)

I have said this time and time again, but the level of talent emerging from such young musicians astounds me – Milly Mason is another example of this. At only 14 years of age, the Welsh singer-songwriter has performed at various festivals (including Lakefest where she was on the same billing as the iconic Manic Street Preachers), won live music contests, and been featured on notable blogs across the globe. Interesting fact: Mason only began playing the guitar during the Covid-19 lockdown and started writing original songs shortly after – so she’s a newbie in the music scene. However, her musicality brought her to the fore very quickly. The latest addition to her discography is ‘Our Autumn Day’.

Recorded at a home studio owned by a friend of the family, Mason and the part-time producer created a song that is soothing, sophisticated and sensational. Inspired by artists like Ed Sheeran and Taylor Swift, there is a contemporary pop feeling to Mason’s music. Moreover, her admiration of these artists’ storytelling songs influenced her need to share personal narratives with listeners, which she does so eloquently in ‘Our Autumn Day’. Influenced by life in its entirety, ‘Our Autumn Day’ touches on the proverbial “rat race” we find ourselves in, how we forget what is important and the need to reconnect with those that mean the most.

“The song tells the situation when we might be feeling lonely or low or just letting the stresses get to us. We realise it’s autumn and how that makes us think of more happier times and reflect on what is most important in our life and the strength we draw on when we think of our loved ones. It puts the focus back on what we should treasure and hold dear.” – Milly Mason on ‘Our Autumn Day’

Just as she is inspired by modern-day pop artists, Milly Mason brings an old-school folk sentiment to her material. Following her piano-driven debut ballad ‘Stuck Here At The Crossroad’, her sophomore single has a more kaleidoscopic arrangement. With a combination of pounding drums, dynamic guitars and rich vocals, Mason showcases her versatility moving from folk to a pop-rock design. What I truly love about Mason is not her songwriting or skills with a guitar but the innocence in her vocals. You can hear her youthful whimsy, however, there is a sense of maturity that exceeds her 14 years.

From the melodic arrangement to the mature vocals, Milly Mason takes my breath away with her enchanting single ‘Our Autumn Day’.
