Dying Habit – Directions (2022)

Hailing from North Wales, alternative rock foursome Dying Habit has a sound that can only be described as awesome. This is my introduction to the group, but they have already turned the heads of global audiences and the press. Featured on Music Arena GH, Red Rock Magazine, York Calling, FV Music Blog, and various online radio stations/playlists, Dying Habit is building a loyal fanbase. The latest addition to their discography is the single ‘Directions’.

The first release from Dying Habit since 2020 (or so says Spotify), ‘Directions’ finds that line between melodic metal and alternative rock. With the hard-hitting guitars and pounding drums, the song hits you in the gut with full force. Interestingly enough, while the instrumentation comes together as a brash whole, each element has prominence in the arrangement highlighting the natural talent of all band members. Add the gruff vocals to the mix and you have a raw, rough and robust three minutes of music.

One thing I love about ‘Directions’ is its smooth but also rugged movements from a nostalgic rock flair to breathtaking contemporary metal – the screaming vocal near the end just adds a sprinkling of originality to the tune. Invoking the 90s grunge and early-2000s alternative metal genres, ‘Directions’ is a much harder, heavier and more provocative style for Dying Habits. I suppose this change in direction was well aided by renowned producer Al Groves who brought us the edginess of Bring Me The Horizon. Whatever inspired this bold move, I have to give them snaps for bringing Dying Habits’ style to fruition.

Just as powerful as its melody, Dying Habit shows depth and innovation in its new track. Elegantly weaving a poignant theme into the gruffness of ‘Directions’ creates an almost palpable grittiness to the song.

“’Directions’ explores different perspectives on toxic relationships and how they can turn a once beautiful soul into hate and despair…how a journey filled with hope and aspiration can take us deep into the darkest depths of ourselves where we can no longer see why we are still there in the first place.” – Dying Habit on ‘Directions’
