Michael Suddes – I’m A Bird (2022)

With a dedication to connecting with crowds through music, US-based Michael Suddes feeds intimacy, charm and heartfelt warmth into his sound. A folk-rock performing artist from Connecticut, Suddes feels most at home as a singer-songwriter and has turned heads at many live venues. As this review is looking at his debut track, it seems reasonable that this is my introduction to Suddes. Come with us as we dip our toes in his debut single ‘I’m A Bird’.

Compared to the likes of Paul Simon and The Beatles, ‘I’m A Bird’ is soothing, soft and has a gentleness in its sound. A toe-tapping tune with head-bopping qualities, there is a sense of calm in the acoustic arrangement. As much as we need hard-hitting roughness in the world of music, you also need smooth songs as a sigh of relief – ‘I’m A Bird’ is one of these. It may not be a rough aggressive song, but there is a roughness in its harmonies. I think this is what makes folk songs so complex – gentle but bold, calm but raw, soothing but tumultuous.

The melody is enchanting and sends waves of serenity down your body; however, it is Michael Suddes’s voice that adds that extra touch of peace. Warm and rich, his insatiable vocals seep into your skin and send your soul soaring with tender vibes. I would compare his tones to John Mayer or Paolo Nutini, but it seems unfair to either artist. John Mayer has a unique sound, but Suddes has an obscure charm that is distinctly Michael Suddes.

There are a lot of things I love about ‘I’m A Bird’, especially the simplistic guitar, drums and interspersed horn arrangement. Yet, what keeps me captivated and wanting more is the friendliness of Suddes’ music. Listening to ‘I’m A Bird’, it is as if you are chatting with an old friend over a cup of tea and just letting everything out. A fresh spark in the folk-rock world, Michael Suddes is definitely one to watch.

In addition to the single, Suddes has released an official music video for ‘I’m A Bird’. You can view it below or on his official YouTube Channel.
