MDL CHLD – Numb (2022)

The brainchild of Canada-based Chris Corsini, MDL CHLD draws together elements of hip-hop and pop in his intriguing music. With an aim of reshaping the way we view the arts, MDL CHLD looks to merge his work as an ASL (American Sign Language) interpreter with his passion for music. This is my introduction to MDL CHLD, but he is already turning heads with his unique releases. Featured on international press like Popular Publicity, Queer Forty and various playlists, he is reaching listeners across the globe. The latest addition to his discography is the single ‘Numb’.

Following his single ‘All The Sudden’, MDL CHLD adopts a harder, darker and heavier sound in ‘Numb’. Heavily synth-driven with strong beats, the song seems to have an “in your face” attitude forcing you to pay attention. The bold melody sends you into a swirl of music with kaleidoscopic lights flitting before you; however, it also has a steady pace that has you floating off on a sonic cloud. I suppose it is this off-centre tone that showcases MDL CHLD’s eclecticism and innovativeness as an artist.

Interestingly enough, the darker melody with haunting but abrupt vocals is not about anything dark at all. In fact, it is an empowering track reaching out to people to be their best and live to the fullest. MDL CHLD explains that he wrote ‘Numb’ “…when I truly hit rock bottom. This was the experience that cracked me open, shifted my life and led me back to myself. I hope this song inspires anybody who is going through their own dark night of the soul to keep going; it really does get better.”
