I’ve Tried Sleeping – Out Here On Our Own (2022)

Raised in a classical household, lead vocalist and guitarist Charlie Edwards was encouraged to follow and perform classical music learning the piano at 5 and playing the violin in the youth symphony throughout his teenage years. The thing is, Edwards found himself being more drawn to Bob Dylan and Pink Floyd than Bach and Beethoven. At 18 he had dropped the violin, taught himself to play guitar, and founded a band. A few decades later, Edwards is still at it with the group I’ve Tried Sleeping.

Placed together by producer Michael Schettler, Jay Condiotti (lead guitar), Eddie Ramirez (bass), AJ Ramirez (drums and percussion), Kelly Porter (organ and synth) and Calista Edwards (cello) joined Charlie Edwards in this unique musical project. Receiving critical acclaim from publications like Sinusoidal Music, the group are turning heads and gaining a following beyond the USA. One of the most recent additions to their discography is the single ‘Out Here On Our Own’.

The fourth track from I’ve Tried Sleeping’s self-titled debut album (set for release in November 2022), ‘Out Here On Our Own’ has a personal meaning to Edwards. Penned as a song for his daughter (who happens to play cello in the band), Charlie Edwards recalls the “terror and exhilaration of being a young adult living in a small apartment in a strange city and trying to make connections while figuring out who I was.” In all honesty, I think many of us face these fears when entering adulthood – Charlie just happened to put it in a song.

Following the single ‘Hard Hitting Rock’, ‘Out Here On Our Own’ is an upbeat, toe-tapping ballad seemingly to have stepped out of the 1990s. Immediately tipping you into a whirlpool of music, I’ve Tried Sleeping reaches into your chest, squeezes your heart and sends chills down your spine with their new single. Unlike ‘Hard Hitting Rock’, there appears to be a calmer, poppier quality to the melodic arrangement making it far easier to listen to. I’m not saying their previous material is difficult to listen to, but ‘Out Here On Our Own’ has a softer side in a soothing sound.

Sincere, sentimental and genuine, ‘Out Here On Our Own’ is a song to make you grin and place you at ease. Truthfully, I cannot wait for I’ve Tried Sleeping’s upcoming album.
