Metrophobia – Words Unsaid (2022)

Blasting onto the blogosphere in their 2021 album Silent Treatment, duo Metrophobia mixes elements of Pixies with Teenage Fanclub tinged by a darker contemporary rock. Founded by Markus Gmür (vocals) and Jose Garrido (guitar, bass and drums), the Swiss pair have a rather distinct sound that is purely Metrophobia. Featured on Edgar Allan Poets, Rock Noticias, Moments Radio, Music To Blame, Joy Of Violent Movement and various other playlists, Metrophobia is reaching audiences far beyond their European borders. The latest addition to their discography is the single ‘Words Unsaid’.

The seventh single on their “one single per month” campaign, ‘Words Unsaid’ follows the grunge track ‘I Care’. Adopting a much darker, grittier and raw musical arrangement, ‘Words Unsaid’ takes the lads back to their alternative rock meets hard rock roots. Combining pounding drums and dynamic guitars, the melodic arrangement is well-textured with intricate layering. What I mean is, while each of the instruments has prominence in the rock anthem, all of the elements come together in a powerful, harmonic whole.

Yes, the melody can hold its own as something outstanding; however, it is the incorporation of Gmür’s vocals that adds a soft soothing to the gritty foundation. Brutal honesty and sentimentality are heard in the almost whispered voice hitting you in the chest with a soul-stirring sound. A tribute to people living with dementia, ‘Words Unsaid’ has an intense intimacy that bursts with vulnerability. Delicately touching on human fragility, Metrophobia adds sensitivity to the profound track ‘Words Unsaid’.

In addition to the single, Metrophobia released an official music video for ‘Words Unsaid’. You can view it below or on their YouTube Channel.
