Harry Klein – Cut & Dirty (2022)

If you are in the mood for a song that you can’t help but dance to while thinking about some introspective lyrics, you are in the right place. This is exactly what Harry Klein has to offer with his latest single ‘Cut & Dirty’ which follows the fictional conversation between a drug dealer and buyer at a rave. Bringing a cinematic touch to irresistible dance vibes, Klein draws us into a psychedelic, yet rather sombre, reflection on rave culture, recreational drug use and the resulting subculture.

Following the disbandment of the jazz-tronica duo F00L, Klein has turned his musical attention to his solo sound. Redefining his music, he fuses dark electronic pulses with introspective lyrics for an addictive blend of dancing vibes and heavy subject matter. Offering a glimpse of what is to come, the single gets us excited for his debut album which is set for release later this year.

‘Cut & Dirty’ has your feet tapping to the sound of the melody from the first moment. There is a slow building feeling to the music that takes you from a rather retro edge to a modern dance vibe. It is a fantastic movement that slowly draws you into the heart of the track and slides the energy of the music into your veins without you really noticing. Before you know it, you will be moving in some way to the music while pulses of neon lights flash through your brain. You can feel the energy of a rave woven into the music, but there is this warbling edge that is slightly psychedelic and retro that tempers the overall dance movement. The interplay between shuffling beats and electronic bursts of light is fantastic as they lead you through the vocals and the press of bodies that fill a dancefloor. This all drops for a light touch that has you suspended in the air before a heavier movement builds beneath your feet.

While the melody has you feeling the movement of a rave, the vocals draw you into a much darker tale. The use of a public service announcement style speech in the opening is great as it introduces you to the true topic of the track. As the opening speech comes to a close, you are left to the moving flow of the music before heading into the conversation of the lyrics. There are two sides to the lyrics as they weave a conversation between the movement of the music. The delivery has a pulse to it that perfectly matches the arrangement of the melody, turning the vocals into another flash of light hitting the dancefloor. While the single is one that will get you moving to its rhythm, there is a much deeper side to it than you might imagine.

Using a pulse of electronic pop and a dance vibe, Harry Klein has you moving to his rhythm while looking at something much deeper and darker through the lyrics. The melody is packed with an energy that sinks into your veins and has you moving on the dancefloor. While you dance, you are drawn into the conversation of the lyrics and the reflection on drug culture that rests within.
