Colenso Jones – Biscuit Tin (2022)

After spending years in bands and side projects, Colenso Jones is emerging from the shadows with his debut single ‘Biscuit Tin’. The alt-country single brings a splash of folk and rock to the foundation for a strong track that is a refreshing burst of air on the music scene. Through this single, Jones is staking his claim to his unique sound, while introducing many of us to the joys of Cymru-Cana.

A stalwart of the movement in Wales, Jones effortlessly fuses folk, country, Americana and soft rock into an infectious sound that will get stuck in your soul. His musical journey started at 10 when he first picked up a guitar and slowly learnt to write his own music. Carrying the joy of creativity with him, he has played in Abbey Road, New York and Maida Vale.

‘Biscuit Tin’ hits you with the unique sound of Jones’ music from the first sound. In the low levels, there is a steady strum of Americana country and folk blends, but the upper tones are a different story. There is a zip and twist to the opening tones that bring an electric touch to the earthiness of the acoustic instrumentation. As you move into the body of the opening verse, those higher tones give way for the heartiness of his sound. The strummed guitars are addictive, while the drums shuffle into your muscles to get your feet tapping to the tone. As the single progresses, the folky country blend takes over for a really moving sound. When the chorus hits, there is a soaring tone in the background that runs up your spine, sending shivers skittering down your arms. There is no way you can listen to this track and not feel the urge to move in some way to the rhythm.

While the melody is steadily hooking you to his sound, Jones’ vocals hit a really heavy subject with an entirely too engaging movement. His vocals have a light scratch in the opening that brings a gruffness to his performance as he sets the scene of the single. As you listen to the lyrics, you feel there is a critique of modern society and how we view each other. The chorus takes the catchiness of the single to another level and will be stuck in your brain for long after the single has ended. Between his performance and the power of his lyrics, he paints a story in your mind while getting you hopelessly addicted to his unique sound.

Foot-tapping, addictive and engaging, ‘Biscuit Tin’ by Colenso Jones is a stunning track that hooks you from the first unique tone, to the moving rhythm and punch of vocals at the end. The melody has this rhythm that you can’t help but move to and get a little lost in. Jones’ vocals take his sound to another level with a light gruffness that scratches across your skin in the best possible way.
