Apple Shakers – Wanna Be (2022)

Known for their energetic, enthusiastic and unforgettably hypnotising live performances, UK-based Apple Shakers hold you in the palm of their hand from the first second. Formed in late 2019, the alternative rock duo from East London pride themselves on accepting every show offered to them to take their music to everyone – and it’s working well. Featured on international press and global stages (they played in Switzerland a couple of weeks ago), Apple Shakers are building a loyal following. The latest addition to their discography is the single ‘Wanna Be’.

On the heels of their well-received track ‘Silhouette’, Apple Shakers adopt a gruff indie-rock style in ‘Wanna Be’. With hints of Arctic Monkeys and The Strokes in their tune, there is a strong “in your face” attitude to the single. Interestingly enough, while the arrangement is melodic, a distortion still exists in the instrumentation – particularly the powerful guitar throughout ‘Wanna Be’. Not a high-paced track, but one that can send your soul soaring and have your heart beating at a higher pace, ‘Wanna Be’ can easily intoxicate any audience.

Along with the interesting melody, Apple Shakers add a meaningful message in the lyricism. The lads share that ‘Wanna Be’ is “a track that empowers scared and tormented souls…the delivery of these words comes from a self-assured and empowered place spreading that very feeling to the listener. There is a modern sentiment that takes a lot from the ‘self-love’ movement but incorporates old-school melodies, attitude and delivery.”

So, what do I think of Apple Shakers? For me, these London lads are shining sonic gems in a mass of pebbles. ‘Wanna Be’ highlights their almost palpable grittiness, but with a harmonic and charming concept. I can easily see this song being played at sold-out festivals with the audience singing along to the chorus.
