7000apart – Whole Lot Left to Lose (2022)

With their single ‘Player 2’, 7000apart drew inspiration from video games, only to reach into your chest with emotive vocals to tug at your heartstrings. They are continuing their catchy combination of addictive melodic flows and heartbreaking vocals in ‘Whole Lot Left to Lose’. Turning their attention to insecurities and the uncertainty of life, they touch on their own experiences with anxiety and depression.

Adding a touch of playfulness to a heavy dose of honesty, the duo have created a single that is easy to relate to and connect with. Looking at the struggles we face in life, they temper this with the ones that are formed solely in our heads. Catchy, touching, emotional and playful, the single is the perfect continuation of their sound and another fantastic taste of their album Feel Your Feelings.

The touch of playfulness hits through the opening of ‘Whole Lot Left to Lose’ with the whistle against a tender melody. While there is this rather light and happy vibe riding the higher levels of the melody, a feeling of something deeper and not as bright is lurking in the lower levels. This beautifully brings the reality of insecurities and uncertainty to sonic life as you go through life looking for the good, while the darkness continues to lurk in the recesses of your mind. Throughout the single, there is this really great shuffle of beats that have you merrily skipping down the soundscape only to be hit with sudden negative thoughts. This is a wonderful melody that has you hooked to the light touches, while bringing a great depth to the single, without you realising it at first.

As you ride the light and positivity of the opening melodic flow, the vocals enter with a confessional edge. There is an honesty to the vocals and lyrics that is really refreshing as the band opens up about their inner thoughts. They bring the feeling of being unsure about things, but embracing life anyway, to sonic glory through some outstanding lyrics. They are able to touch on a lot of issues we all face at some point, only to inject a positive shrug into the single. As you join them in shaking off these worries, they lead you into the brightness of the melody, only to end the track with the dark thoughts that hit late at night.

Playful, honest, catchy and emotional, ‘Whole Lot Left to Lose’ by 7000apart captures those insecure thoughts that flit through our brains before lightly embracing positivity. The melody is a fantastically catchy fusion of playful whistles and dark depths. The vocals have a confessional edge that opens up the emotions of the track as the lyrics touch on extremely relatable worries.
