The Nightshift Cashier – Burger, Midnight (2022

If Toto were to have a child with Steely Dan, the chances are it would be The Nightshift Cashier. Created by Australia-based musician and producer Bud Wilkins, The Nightshift Cashier has been described as “yacht rock noir” with its intriguing sound. Despite only having one track to his name, this talented artist is already gracing the pages of notable blogs like We Write About Music. Come with us as we dip our toes into his debut single ‘Burger, Midnight’ – metaphorical dipping, of course.

Dragging you back to the pop and rock sounds of the 1980s, The Nightshift Cashier combines power-pop sentiments with a nostalgic classic rock style. A multi-instrumentalist, Wilkins shows us his versatility not only with his instruments but also as a flexible artist traversing different genres. A guitar-driven track, there is a lot of classic guitar within the arrangement; however, The Nightshift Cashier’s true musicality breaks through when he incorporates a soul-inspired guitar. It is this beautifully textured melody that lifts you at the high points, drops you at the lower ones, and simply makes the experience of ‘Burger, Midnight’ one to remember.

Along with the intense intimacy in the kaleidoscopic soundscape, The Nightshift Cashier shows depth in the intriguing lyricism. A natural storyteller, ‘Burger, Midnight’ is a tale of “star-crossed musician lovers who leave their life behind after ‘coming across’ some money. What do they do to start over? Open a burger joint…” – The Nightshift Cashier’s words, not mine. For some reason, I find the soothing melody one adequate representation of the theme – it’s not too obscure or outrageous, but there is still a depth with which people can connect.
