Chapell – Gold (2022)

Through his single ‘Wave as You Walk Past’, Chapell drew us in with his quirky dance flow as he considered the friendships that fade with time. He is now using his fantastic storytelling ability to drop us into a very different tale through ‘Gold’. With this bluesy rock track, he delves into a world of what-ifs and how different life could have turned out if certain choices were changed.

Hitting us with his own experience through the lyrics, there is a wonderful relatability to the personal anecdote. Sprinkling some nostalgic tones through the 80s vibes of the track, he teleports us into the past and a pivotal moment in his life. While staying true to the slightly off-kilter tones of his previous release, he takes you into a new rabbit hole through his sound.

The guitar that opens ‘Gold’ grabs you by the arm and pulls you into the soundscape, like you are running down the road. The running feeling of the opening flows into a more nostalgic and reflective vibe as the pace slows. There is a feeling of flying to the guitars as they soar through the middle and higher layers of the melody. Resting below them is a beat that lightly holds your body to get it moving from side to side. Through the melody, you can hear the touch of retro tones through the guitar, but there is something wonderfully unique woven into this. The delicate trills of the guitar that make their way through the background add texture to the sound, while the main guitar line continues to lead you down the path of the track. Later in the single, there is a guitar solo that has you dancing around and turning the volume up as it soars out with its own take on the story.

While Chapell is able to create seriously addictive melodies, his vocals back up the infectious vibes perfectly. Through the lyrics, he takes you back in time to a moment in his life when things started to change. He starts the trip down memory lane with what happened and the emotions that he felt at the time. This turns into a consideration of what could have happened if he made one decision differently. It is a great look into his own past, but this is interspersed with a larger tale of spirals and how one decision can change everything. The chorus is catchy and will get stuck in your head, whether you want it to or not.

Chapell takes us back to a pivotal moment and considers what would happen if an important decision was made differently, in the nostalgic rock tune ‘Gold’. The melody is packed with fantastic guitar lines that draw you further into the sound before flying up into the sky. His vocal performance takes the addictive vibes of the music to another level while pulling you into the story of the lyrics.
