Marshal Herridge ft Caity Gyorgy – A Day Too Late (2022)

‘A Day Too Late’ is the first instalment of a series of jazz songs created by Marshal Herridge and it does not disappoint. Featuring rising star Caity Gyorgy, the single brings a touch of Latin soul to a jazzy foundation. Adding in a hint of nostalgia and they have created a song you will happily relax into and want to listen to again and again.

No newcomer to the jazz world, Herridge has performed with some of North America’s preeminent jazz musicians, with his original compositions being featured on radio and Spotify playlists. Joining him for this first release of the series is JUNO-winning Gyorgy who has been named one of 8 Canadian Women in Jazz You Need to Know by JazzFM91. Through this single, they are paying homage to jazz greats while adding their own unique flair to the sound.

‘A Day Too Late’ gets you into the vibe of the single through the piano line that slides into easy listening tones. It is joined by some jazzier drums that tap across your shoulders and get you swaying and sinking into the melody. The interplay between the piano and the drums is just this side of decadent and an absolute pleasure to listen to. As you travel further into the single, music brings a hazy feeling to your senses before the wind instruments enter on a gentle breeze. Each instrument is given a chance to shine and they do so beautifully. While you feel the urge to sit back and soak up the movement of the music, there is an almost rainy day vibe where you are inside a cosy room as the rain patters down on the window. In the last moments of the track, the flute trills and leads you out into the cool air that follows a downpour.

While the music on its own can easily have you hooked to the single, Gyorgy’s vocals bring a whisky warmth to the track. Her voice slides up your spine and washes over your skin like satin. There is this charming edge to her performance that pulls you close and has you relaxing in its warm embrace. As she has you relaxing into her vocals, the lyrics hit a melancholic note of opportunities lost and the wish to turn back time. Her performance is really stunning and one of the many reasons why you are sure to listen to this track again and again.

Marshal Herridge has teamed up with Caity Gyorgy for a melancholic tale of missed love that is woven into the warm and easy jazz vibes of ‘A Day Too Late’. Through the melody, they draw you into a cosy room with rain running down the windows where you can relax into the sound of the track. The vocals bring a warmth to the single before tugging at your heartstrings.
