Scot Free Sessions – Geoff’s Ghost (2022)

With the second single off their upcoming debut album, Scot Free Sessions plays out a haunting mini-movie through ‘Geoff’s Ghost’. Telling the story of a mother, a son and a suitcase, the single has a heart of Americana storytelling that is brought to sonic life by acoustic rock and alt-country music. Originally workshopped at a songwriting retreat, the hard-driving track is an outstanding taste of what the band has to offer.

While this band is a collaboration of musicians who have been brought together by Scot Robinson, it provides a stunning vehicle for his songs. Robinson is joined on this track by Bobby Cameron (guitar, vocals), Kenny Aronoff (drums), James LoMenzo (bass) and Joel Guzman (accordion). Cameron and Robinson teamed up to create around 85 songs with some of them making their way on the already acclaimed upcoming debut album.

‘Geoff’s Ghost’ grabs your hand and pulls you into the driving strum of the guitars. There is a heavy Americana darkness to the melody that carries the electric feeling of a storm in the air. The foot-tapping beats drive through your senses, while the guitars have you bouncing around to their movement. While the drums and guitars push the melody, the accordion adds a wonderful bounce and bop to the sound. Each note captures the essence of the track and allows it to shine with a light cinematic vibe. It is a really fun melody that makes you want to grab onto a friend or loved one and spin around. As the single progresses, the power of the melody increases and soars to new heights, only to drop for a melancholy moment before picking up again.

While the melody has you dancing around and feeling the first touches of the Americana vibe of the track, it is really the vocals and lyrics that make the single. They bring the movie of the track to life with a light growl and alt-country touch. Riding the driving guitar tones, the vocals call for you to get into the vibe before drawing you into the story of Geoff. The lyrics have a masterful curl of storytelling prowess that paints the scenes in your mind. You can easily see the story playing out in your mind’s eye, while the emotions of the track are driven into your soul by the vocals. The chorus is really addictive and will stick in your brain for a really long time.

Scot Free Sessions has you jumping around and shouting out the chorus of ‘Geoff’s Ghost’ through their addictive Americana storytelling talents. While the melody drives through your soul with an infectious mixture of guitars, drums and accordion, it is the gruff curling vocals that make the single. They wrap around storytelling lyrics that effortlessly pull you into the tale of the track.
