Egotist – I Worry Too Much (2022)

Returning to “normal life” in a post-pandemic society has been an interesting time with many up and down experiences. In June 2022, an up came our way as Egotist emerged from Manchester’s bars and venues to become one of the more exciting artists hitting our virtual desk. A sonic gem in the pool of pebbles, the UK-based Foursome are sophisticated, sensational and really just jaw-dropping (in a good way). The most recent addition to their discography is the single ‘I Worry Too Much’.

Hot on the heels of their well-received debut track ‘God’, Egotist slathers indie-pop sentiments with elements of synth-pop and indie-rock. Reminiscent, at least slightly, of Bastilles and Tame Impala, the band combine powerful guitars with pounding drums. Yet, while there is a roughness to the song, it is beautifully textured with softer keys and rich vocals. An experimental and eclectic arrangement, Egotist show their innovation in the arrangement; however, the further obscurity in the soundscape is what gives them a distinctive sound.

While the bold melody can hold its own, it is frontman Joe Prior’s vocals that enhance the richness of ‘I Worry Too Much’, as well as a disconcerting obscurity. Moreover, the theme behind the flowing track showcases the depth behind Egotist. Touching on feelings of anxiety, fear, restlessness and inner turmoil, Egotist discuss how to cope with difficult situations (and the consequences of failed attempts at coping). While a sombre subject, ‘I Worry Too Much’ is a subtle acceptance and understanding of the problem all woven into a glittering sonic tapestry.

“Being an anxious person and restless person, I can easily overload with emotion, especially when things go wrong. After different failed attempts of dealing with this at a particularly difficult time in my life, I ended up seeking some kind of sedative…whatever took away the angst. ‘I Worry Too Much’ is about a friend who was always there for me during the breakdowns and after the pills wore off.” – Joe Prior on ‘I Worry Too Much’
