I Panic – I’m Here in the Fridge (2022)

With his single ‘I’m Here in the Fridge’, I Panic is bringing a quirky and ironic twist to the idea of chilling your relationship. Inspired by someone saying she had put her relationship in the fridge, the single looks at how the other half of the relationship feels about this. A really energetic and rather catchy single, it delves into a strange tale of a guy being locked in a fridge by his girlfriend.

This story is packed into a lively fusion of rock, pop, and post-punk, courtesy of the musicality of Marcel van Tetering, the solo artist behind the panic. Drawing on inspiration from a wide range of artists and genres, he blends the best elements together to tell the stories of his music. With the ethos that a good song doesn’t care about who is playing it, he infuses emotion into each word of the tales.

The lively drums opening ‘I’m Here in the Fridge’ fills you with the energy of the track and gets you bouncing off the walls. There is a burst of electricity that shoots through the music into your veins, getting you instantly hooked to the sound of the track. The guitar brings a rather groovy twang that changes up the energy of the melody. It is impossible to not move to this music in some way, whether that is your body bopping around or your feet tapping. As the single progresses, there are a lot of different melodic elements that weave their way through. The pulse of the guitars and the slap of the drums meet an electronic tone that warbles with a new wave vibe. It is a fantastic melody that showcases the versatility of I Panic and his amazing ability to fuse very diverse sounds into an engaging soundtrack.

While the melody has you energetically bouncing away to its lively sound, his vocals draw you into the perspective of someone who has been locked in a fridge. There is a really quirky vibe to the performance that is bolstered by the strange topic. There is a plea in his performance as he asks to be let out, before the echoing harmonies offer some understanding. His performance picks up some of the bounce of the melody while catching your attention with its undeniable catchiness. Close to the end of the track, he questions whether he has been forgotten, before returning to the plea of being let out. This all comes to an end with a rather abrupt stop which somehow makes the single even better.

I Panic has you merrily bouncing away to a quirky tale that brings a more literal edge to cooling a relationship in the fun and engaging ‘I’m Here in the Fridge’. Both the melody and vocals have an addictive bounce that gets you moving to the rhythm. The lyrics are fun to listen to as they weave their strange tale in the most engaging way possible.
