Quick – Limonds Wynd (2022)

Quick may be the name of this Glasgow band, but there is nothing quick about their latest single ‘Limonds Wynd’. After all, these purveyors of, as they call it “newgrass”, have been winning awards since their very first live performance. They were winners of the Danny Kyle Open Stage in Glasgow in 2016 and their single ‘Never Heard a Voice Like Yours Before’ in July 2019 was selected as BBC Radio Scotland’s Single of the Week. Now, the original trio was augmented by double bass and fiddle, beefing up their sound another notch.

So, what could they possibly mean by that “newgrass” term? Listening to ‘Limonds Wynd’, those a bit in the know of the original British Isles folk music and American bluegrass, as well as the psych-folk rock innovators from the late 60s like Incredible String Band and Fairport Convention, might get a general idea. Quick didn’t take a quick route in combining all of the above (possible) inspirations but made a layered musical combination that nicely ties up all of the above strands into a very detailed and layered tune that actually brings all those “old” sounds into the current musical scene.

They combine some intricate instrumentation and layered vocals and give it a tempo that sounds both old and modern, giving the song quite a timeless quality. It sounds as if it could have been recorded in 1968, 1998, or yesterday. One question: could we have an album soon, please?
