Track of the Day: Zach Churchill – Surrender

A “no holds barred” artist, singer-songwriter Zach Churchill has an evocative and provocative style exploring those topics people don’t necessarily speak about. Addiction, pain, angst, vulnerability, love and ultimately acceptance, Churchill’s music is a plethora of tumultuous themes wrapped in sophisticated, poetic arrangements. Featured on Sinusoidal Music, Roadie Music, Gobsmag, Elicit Magazine and various playlists, Churchill is turning heads on a global scale. The latest addition to his well-received repertoire is the single ‘Surrender’.

Taken off his upcoming album Greater Than (to be released in October 2022), ‘Surrender’’ explores “…difficult feelings and painful trauma with a brave curious spirit; the single deals with addiction and hopelessness…” Dynamic guitars blend with pounding drums and interspersed piano to create a soul-stirring rock-inspired sound. Add Churchill’s obscure gruff vocals and you have an emotional sonic swirl in which you can become completely lost.

While Zach Churchill’s voice has a rich boldness, there is a vulnerability underlying the dulcet tones. Moreover, the timbre combined with the evocative melody seems to tug at your heartstrings. The thing is, it is not only Churchill’s vulnerable vocal execution that is slightly disconcerting but the well-placed piano bridge between the chorus, verses and ending lyrics finding the balance between organic and electric instrumentation. Perhaps this movement from a typical rock ballad to an acoustic folky track elegantly represents the transition from pain and fear to acceptance and empowerment. Then again, that’s just my opinion.

Filled with disarming honesty, sincerity, sentimentality and originality, ‘Surrender’ is an exposition of human fragility in the most beautiful sonic form.
