A Chat with Last Motion Picture (08.08.22)

The solo project of UK-based singer-songwriter Andy James, Last Motion Picture is an eclectic fusion of genres proving he is not to be pigeon-holed. We speak with Last Motion Picture about his new single, who he would like to spend the weekend with, and future plans!

OSR: What drew you to music?

Last Motion Picture: I’ve been a music-obsessive since I was a kid. One of my earliest musical memories is a mix tape that my Dad had made and named ‘Tape number one’ (he had a box brimming with pen-numbered albums) that we listened to on long drives to the lakes. Being inspired by artists like those on the mix tape when I was young, and then learning to write my own songs felt like a kind of magic.

OSR: What inspires you to make music?

Last Motion Picture: It’s always been the best form of therapy, the only time I’m fully myself.

OSR: What can you tell us about your single ‘Your Heart Is A Stranger’s House’?

Last Motion Picture: It’s a song inspired by the feeling of displacement when people and places change. Losing part of someone who was once close as they gradually become a stranger.

OSR: What do you hope people take from the single?

Last Motion Picture: I hope people can relate to it in some way, particularly if they’re struggling with change and its effect on relationships.

OSR: Describe your music in one sentence.

Last Motion Picture: 80s-inspired alt-pop/ melodramatic noise.

OSR: What do you think makes you unique as an artist?

Last Motion Picture: Personal experiences reflected in the lyrics, interesting production elements, and distinctive vocals!

OSR: If you could spend the weekend with any person (not necessarily a musician), who would it be and why?

Last Motion Picture: Bruce Lee – he was my childhood hero.

OSR: If you were a colour, what would you be?

Last Motion Picture: Orange.

OSR: Do you have future plans for Last Motion Picture?

Last Motion Picture: I’ve written an album’s worth of tracks, so I’ll be regularly releasing singles for the next few months followed by the full album next year. There’ll be plenty of gigs throughout that time too.

OSR: Do you have a message for our readers?

Last Motion Picture: Go stream the brand new single ‘Your Heart Is A Stranger’s House’!
