Dragnfly Industri – Ghost (2022)
While many people were sitting about in their pyjamas binging Netflix shows, singer-songwriter Jo Maloney chose to explore the art of songwriting during Covid-19 lockdowns. Emerging from the past two years of lockdown with a passion for creating original music, Maloney chose to pursue a music project using the pseudonym Dragnfly Industri – the dragonfly being a symbol of growth. Proving it is never too late to follow your dreams, no matter how risky, this Australia-based songstress has featured on Sinusoidal Music, Irish Mirror and various playlists. Come with us as we dip our toe into her debut single ‘Ghost’ – metaphorical dipping, of course.
Inspired by the likes of Freddie Mercury and Dolly Parton, Maloney is a charismatic artist oozing passion in her unique melodies. Since the age of 5, Maloney has dreamed of being a musician and now her dream is a reality with ‘Ghost’. Penned over a period of 12 months, ‘Ghost’ is about her life journey and navigates personal growth in its intimate tune. She explains that the song is “…about daring to fulfil dreams no matter how old we are because they forever haunt us to make the decision as to whether we choose to let them live or die…it will have you inspired to forget about your head and follow your heart.”
A combination of dynamic guitars and pounding drums are dusted with interspersed piano adding a harmonic intensity to the melodic arrangement. Soothing, soft and gentle the ballad is heart-warming; however, it is not completely straightforward. Opening as a soft and laidback song, Maloney embraces you with a rich warmth but the movement to something heavier shows another side of her personality. Powerful guitars and drums hit you in the chest as a more rock-inspired design pushes through the melody – yet the whimsical quirkiness of her vocals never waivers.
Overwhelming and hard-hitting in its kaleidoscopic soundscape, ‘Ghost’ is an unforgettable experience. I cannot wait for more from this talented musician.
