Along the Edge of Everything – Daffodils (2022)

The audio-visual musical project Along the Edge of Everything hit the ground running with their debut single ‘Daffodils’. An aggressive and confrontational track, it also offers a tongue-in-cheek edge that lightens the electronic pop pulses. While packed with experimental tones, there is a relatability to the single even when the lyrics and music delve into something that a lot of people may not have directly experienced.

As the project is audio-visual in nature, there is an extremely engaging music video for this single. Inspired by Along the Edge of Everything’s experience with different psychedelics, the video brings a quirky quality to the track while bringing the situation of the lyrics to life. Moving away from the calm, downtempo music they used to create, this project offers a completely new style that is a lot of fun to listen to.

‘Daffodils’ breathes through the opening into a sweep of tones that lead you directly to a moving melody. The beats have a great dance vibe to them that is just this side of aggressive. The electronic tones that drone lightly over the beats add some texture to the music. The moving rhythm of the melody over the verses leads you directly into the electronic pulses of the chorus. It is an interesting melodic movement as these electronic tones create the chorus on their own and bring a new edge to the track. Throughout this, the dance beats continue to keep you moving, before a sweep of psychedelic awakening hits. This rises in a swirl of colours like you are hitting a high and the colours around you burst into vibrant brilliance. It is an undeniably interesting melody.

While you are moving to the melody, the vocals draw you into an incredibly quirky and rather strange story. It is a journey that has a serious psychedelic edge that tips the world slightly to the side, leaving you a bit off-kilter. The slightly aggressive edge that rests in the low levels of the melody is softened by the strange sense of detached wonder in the vocals. It is like you are seeing and experiencing everything for the first time as you make your way through the story of the lyrics. The quirky edge lightens some of the heavier touches of the track.

The psychedelic tones of the single are brought to visual life by the accompanying music video. The video opens with a simple act of picking daffodils, but spirals into a strange psychedelic trip. Communing with bees, feeling the slight paranoia of a really strange trip and moving to the unique flows of the single have been packed into the visuals. It is a wonderfully odd video that perfectly captures the essence of the single. The transition between the high being experienced and how other people see it is also a lot of fun.

Along the Edge of Everything hits the ground running with the quirky, psychedelic trip that is ‘Daffodils’ and the engagingly odd music video. While the single has a quirky touch, there is a solid melodic flow backing it as you move through the off-kilter tale of the lyrics. The accompanying music video takes these elements and turns them into really engaging visuals.
