Slowlife – Dreaming (2022)

Starting out as a guitar loop, the single slowly became a full song when Slowlife finished writing the lyrics on a retreat in Italy. Looking at the different kinds of dreams you can experience, he moves from nightmares to fever dreams and blissfully soft dreams that always seem too good to be true. Woven into the cotton soft tones is a hint of nostalgia that blurs the edges of past and present as you float away into the dreamscape. The guitar line has a gentle bop to it that has your head moving to its soft flow, while the more ambient backing tones continue their soft journey through your mind. A cascade of glittering tones falls like a colourful waterfall into an endless sea of soft colours and potential. The softness of the melody can’t be denied and it is almost impossible for you to listen and not feel your worries slipping away.
While the melody easily creates the perfect space for you to slip into dreams, regardless of what they are, it is Slowlife’s vocals that bring the final blanket of dreaminess. His voice offers the lo-fi vibes of the track, while turning your attention to the potential dreams you can slip into as you retreat from the real world for a moment. There is a lilting flow to his performance that makes you want to close your eyes and sink into the single. Through the lyrics, he considers drifting off into dreams while still being wide awake and the peace this can bring.
