The Margaret Hooligans – Fat Tongue (2022)
One roof, two people, amazing music – this is pretty much a short description of The Margaret Hooligans. Drawing together elements of funk, soul and garage rock, Meg Cratty and Mr Strontium create a “swirl of sloppy transcendence” perfect for a modern-day audience. Only a couple of weeks ago I was introduced to this US-based duo and now I’m enjoying more of their intoxicating music. The latest addition to their critically acclaimed repertoire is the single ‘Fat Tongue’.
Following their conceptual take on the tale of Red Riding Hood in ‘Red Rider’, The Margaret Hooligans astound me once again with ‘Fat Tongue’. Not the only one to sing their praises, the pair have been featured on other notable blogs like Edgar Allan Poets, Mangowave, YMX, Rising Artists Blog and Find No Enemy. Turning our heads once again, ‘Fat Tongue’ is a combination of percussion, drums and guitars within an eclectic soundscape. The thing is, not only is the instrumentation eclectic but the arrangement acts as almost two songs in a single one. The movement from a soft shoe-inspired opening to a blast of hard rock with powerful guitar riffs illustrates effortless versatility.
Easily defined as obscure, ‘Fat Tongue’ has an almost spoken-word style with an underlying sing-along stance. As with their previous work, The Margaret Hooligans once again hit us with an “in your face” brashness and attitude. A raising of an eyebrow, crooked smile and raised shoulders mocking you, taunting you but also playfully teasing you. Yet, while there is a playfulness in ‘Fat Tongue’, its theme is far from jovial messing about. Touching on the bizarre aspects existing in 21st-century culture, ‘Fat Tongue’ looks at the influences of social media, notifications and the ridiculousness of “pundits spewing egregious nonsense”.
The fourth single from their upcoming album Turntable Tribulations, ‘Fat Tongue’ is hard-hitting and powerful proving The Margaret Hooligans to be a force of nature. I cannot wait for new music from the dynamic duo.
