Track of the Day: Laura Lang – Black Sedan

If you were to merge the sounds of Fiona Apple with Lana Del Rey, the chances are you’ll find Laura Lang. Embracing her passion for music at a young age, the now 17-year-old singer-songwriter has been writing and singing songs for years. A storyteller at heart, Lang uses personal narratives to connect with audiences on an intimate level. Despite being so young, she is already making waves on an international scale receiving coverage on Rising Artists Music Blog, Obscure Sound, and various playlists. The latest addition to her discography is ‘Black Sedan’.

The follow-up to her well-received EP All Downhill from There, US-based Lang transforms her personal experiences into the 4-and-a-half-minute single ‘Black Sedan’. Opening with her trademark soothing folk vocals and steady guitar, you feel a calm spread from your head to your feet. The charm of her soft vocal execution sets you adrift on a glistening sonic river with smooth sailing ahead. Yet, her emotive musicality blasts through the speakers when a rock-inspired sound brings heavy drumbeats, punchy electric guitars and a more intense side to Lang.

Showcasing her natural talent as a musician, Lang finds the delicate balance between simplistic acoustic and kaleidoscopic synthetic sounds in ‘Black Sedan’. What I truly enjoy, beyond her versatility as an artist, is how effortlessly the transition is made. Moreover, how the arrangement aligns with the profound theme of ‘Black Sedan’ – an expression of Lang’s “disappointment with herself and the way things turned out.”

All people feel disappointment and regret in some way at some time (unless you’re a really optimistic and self-assured individual). Laura Lang captivates the desperation, anger, frustration and anxiety of these emotions in ‘Black Sedan’. Taking you from the smooth contemplation of your situation to the angsty yell from the bottom of your gut she elegantly navigates the emotive journey. The first single from her upcoming project Bad Luck, ‘Black Sedan’ is sincere, sentimental, obscure and innovative.
