The Winters – Echo (2022)

With their debut EP This Full-Grown Nightmare, The Winters brought a high-energy rock sound as they explored painful relationships, lost love and planning for the future. Featuring a new line-up, their single ‘Echo’ feels like the natural progression of their sound and the punchy tales they have to offer. Delving into the struggle of breaking free from hard times, the track showcases a matured musical edge that is darker and heavier than before.

Ben (bass, vocals), Harry (drums, vocals) and founding member Joe (lead vocals, guitar) drive the melody of the track and turn it onto a great earworm of a single. An exciting band unleashing exciting music, it is not hard to see why they have been receiving glowing reviews from across the world. If you are in the mood for a single that has you rocking out, this might be the one for you.

‘Echo’ drives through your senses as the guitars push the melody into existence. There is a sweeping feeling to the music that catches you in its movement and will not let you go. The guitars dance together and are propelled by the drums that get you bopping to the beat. There is a slightly heavier feeling to the music compared to the band’s previous releases, but the polished delivery showcases the evolution of their sound. It is an extremely sophisticated melodic movement creating a current of sound that flows like a river under the vocals which ride the rapids of the music. The way the two elements of the track complement each other is stunning. Later in the track, the music drops to a single guitar line and builds with a darker feeling. The almost marching vibes of this moment are lightened when the rest of the instrumentation comes back.

As you are caught in the river of sound that forms the melody, Joe’s vocals create a raft that you can set sail on. His performance draws you into the story of the lyrics that bring a spiral into hard times. Through the vocal performance, they let you know that you are not alone when you hit rock bottom and that there is a path forward. They bring a connection that builds your spirit and strength, giving you the boost you need to fight on. When the chorus hits, the heaviness of the melody lifts slightly and you are swept into the uplifting rapids of the track. As the melody drops for the heavier build, the vocals go down to follow, adding to the darkness, only for the chorus to burst with strength.

The Winters take us on a journey to rock bottom, before building our strength and breaking through the hard times in the sweeping current of ‘Echo’. The melody forms a river of sound which breaks into rapids for the vocals to ride. The power of the single slowly builds in your soul, giving you the boost you need to fight on.
