HOL – 333 (2022)
Drawing together indie-pop, dream-pop and tinges of pop-rock, HOL’s music can be described as mellow and dreamy. Sharing her music with us since 2018 with a well-received debut EP, HOL (also known as Hollie Findlay) has been gaining a reputation for engaging, moving music. Along with a UK following, this singer-songwriter is reaching audiences on an international level with coverage from RGM, Tongue Tied Magazine, and various playlists. The latest addition to her repertoire is the single ‘333’.
In our interview with HOL in 2021 she described her style as “inventive and experimental”, and this innovativeness is evident in ‘333’. Following her mellow dream-pop track ‘Intoxicated Dreamin’, ‘333’ inserts a more folk-inspired style to her sound. As toe-tapping as previous work, this single can have you swaying along to the beat; however, it appears to be more intimate than ‘Intoxicated Dreamin’. Perhaps it is the acoustic-inspired soundscape, but ‘333’ has a sophisticated innocence in its melody.
What I love about ‘333’ is the melding of what might be contrasting instrumentation in a harmonic way. Taking contemporary synths with a simplistic acoustic guitar, HOL finds the delicate line between original and electric. Moreover, an eclectic edge is added with the insertion of electric guitar riffs throughout the track.
The melody can hold its own as an engaging single, but it is HOL’s intimate lyricism that highlights her depth as an artist. Using a personal narrative, HOL reaches audiences on a more intense level. In ‘333’ she touches on the process of growing up, the mistakes we make, and the dreams we aim to achieve. She explains that ‘333’ “is a song written from the perspective of a teenager who is trying to navigate the emotions of growing up…”
