Lyla DiPaul – Sleepless Nights (2022)

Formed approximately four years ago while studying at Loyola University, New Orleans, foursome Lyla DiPaul set out to build a following on the gigging circuit – and they did just that. Now in 2022, the US-based group are gaining a larger following with their original material and extensive coverage. Featured on Edgar Allan Poets, Indie Dock Music Blog, Indie O’ Clock and numerous radio stations, Lyla DiPaul is turning heads on an international basis. The latest addition to their well-received discography is the EP Sleepless Nights.

Influenced by the likes of Joni Mitchell, Taylor Swift, Phoebe Bridgers and The Beatles, Lyla DiPaul bring a bright pop meets folk sound in Sleepless Nights. Opening with the soft, soothing, acoustic-inspired track ‘If I Feel Again’, Lyla DiPaul sends you off on a glistening sonic river wrapped in a warm blanket of sound. Harmonically combining an acoustic piano with electric guitars, the band seem to find a melodic line between organic and electric in this simplistic soundscape.

The strong folk sound is evident in the full EP with a heartfelt piano taking prominence in each track; however, Lyla DiPaul showcases innovativeness as each song also has a difference in its execution. ‘Is This A Dream?’ is bouncier than the preceding ‘If I Feel Again’, but then we take a softer, smoother tone in ‘Sleepless Nights’. ‘Heart In A Box’ ends Sleepless Nights with its upbeat, toe-tapping sound that can get you swaying from the first note.

The charming melodies appear light-hearted, but there is a powerful profoundness in the lyricism. DiPaul explains that Sleepless Nights is an EP filled with self-reflection experienced during the 2020 Covid-19 quarantine. The theme stems from self-acceptance telling the tale of “accepting love after you’ve been hurt and then the even harder task of trying to let it go”. Intensely intimate, the group connect with listeners in a deeper, more intriguing way.
