Snakedoctors ft Christine Corless – Too Many (2022)

Snakedoctors are masters at bringing an intimate intensity to their music, as we have seen in ‘Got Him Another Girl’ and ‘Crime Story’. Now, working with Christine Corless, they continue this sound as they draw us into the dark grunge tones of ‘Too Many’. Looking at the difficult life issues that we have to tackle, the dark grunge tone of the band is given a new twist through Corless’ vocals.

There are actually two versions of this song, but the single comes from the black album, which is the darker and more grunge one. The other version on the band’s red CD has a more new wave edge, bringing a lighter side to the track. As the third single from the band’s album Four and a Half, this single will have you diving into the rest of the album.

‘Too Many’ slowly builds through the opening on the backs of the guitars. The melody progressively becomes louder and more heavy-hitting, with a serious push behind it. You can feel the grunge tones making their way into your brain. As the vocals enter, there is a deep beat that punches at your chest, leading to the rise of the guitars. It is a wonderfully dark melody that draws you into the shadows of the world where the issues of life rest. Through the rather addictive flow of darkness, the melody crowds around you, enveloping you in the sound. Over the verses, there is a slight drop in the intensity of the music, but this all comes back as you head toward the chorus. Through this movement, the band brings their intimate intensity to life with a masterful flair.

While the melody pulls you close with its grungy darkness, the first vocal line slides in with an inky blackness. There is a gruffness to the vocals that is contrasted by the smooth flow of Corless’ performance. The interplay between the two vocal lines is wonderful and brings a great play between light and dark to life. Corless’ vocals are the lighter tones that bring a touch of hope and softness, but as you listen to the vocals you can tell that this is all false pretence. The dark undertones of the lyrics are brought to sonic life by the gruffer vocal line.

Teaming up with Christine Corless for ‘Too Many’, Snakedoctors drape darkness over your senses, while tapping into the difficult issues of life. The music reaches out inky grunge tendrils to draw you toward the shadows where the problems in life rest. The vocals have an amazing interplay that pits light against dark, only for the lyrics to show that the light is not as bright as you think.
