Maren Taylor Reed – Call Me (All the Time) (2022)

Maren Taylor Reed brings a fusion of pop, RnB and hip-hop to our ears with her debut single ‘Call Me (All the Time)’. Using an alternative flow, she is staking a claim to her sound that brings something uniquely her to the soundscape. Packed with her passion and an addictive vibe, the single perfectly merges different sonic elements and styles.

While Reed is best known as a beauty influencer highly knowledgeable about skincare, she is letting us know that there is a lot more beneath the surface. Her musical talents have led Gold Record winning artist, Sam Harvey, to produce this track. This single is not only our introduction to her sound, but is also a wonderful taster for what the full-length album she is working on will have to offer.

‘Call Me (All the Time)’ has a slightly hazy opening that seems to come at you from a distance, only to grow louder and clearer the closer it comes. There is a sweep of sound that shimmers into gentle embers that lead you to the hip-hop beats of the melody. These beats have a bounce that moves through your body and causes you to bop to their rhythm. Riding over these beats is an RnB clicking flow that shimmers with warmth as the single continues. It is a dynamic melody that moves through a range of different styles with an ease that showcases Reed’s musicality. The polished flow of the music is wonderful and really sets a rather high bar for the music that will follow it.

The dynamic movement of the melody is just a taster for the vocals that are as varied as the music. Reed enters the soundscape with a smooth melodic line that is all delicate pop, with a light touch of RnB. This drops you into a rap that brings a hit of attitude to the single, which is a wonderful contrast to the smoothness of the opening. The lyrics pick up this attitude as they touch on bad relationships and moving on with serious confidence. While the vocal performance is as dynamic as the melody, there is an effortless flow to the performance as Reed moves from one style of delivery to another. Later in the track, the sighing backing vocals add depth to the soundscape.,

Maren Taylor Reed is really setting the bar high with the dynamic, yet rich, genre-fusing movement of her debut single, ‘Call Me (All the Time)’. Both the vocal performance and melody have a dynamic flow as they slide from one musical style to another. There is a touch of attitude woven into her performance that brings a confidence to the polished sound.
