Jeffrey Chan – Vertigo (2022)

With his single ‘Try’, Jeffrey Chan pushed the boundaries of modern pop ballads by merging them with some retro soundscapes. This merger of sounds continues with his single ‘Vertigo’, which sees him collaborating with Dibs again. This synth-pop single looks to capture the dizzying high that comes from falling in love and how this can often turn into a loss of inhibitions.

Packed with euphoria, the single considers how falling in love can drive you to do some crazy things. To top off the movement of the single, Chan has released an official music video with the help of Nick Karras. Listening to this single, you can easily hear why Chan has a fast-growing fan base and you know that he definitely has a long career ahead of him.

‘Vertigo’ uses a pulse of piano chords to open the single with a tender touch. This gives way to a paced beat that has you bopping to the rhythm. There is a serious blast of 80s synth-pop to the melody, bringing a strange wash of euphoria with it. Through the melody, you are caught in a river of bubbling emotion that leaves you dizzy with affection. It is a rather infectious melody that you can’t help but move to. The buzzing energy of the track fills your senses with the euphoria of falling in love, as the possibilities for the future are injected into your veins. The movement of the synths is really catchy, enhancing the vocals that are equally infectious, and will have you singing along before the song ends.

As the synth-driven melody gets you bopping and dancing away to the high of falling in love, Chan’s vocals grab your attention like a hit to the chest. This hit is the emotion of the track that shivers in your chest and threatens to bubble over. While his performance in the chorus is extremely catchy and addictive, the verses have a more subdued feeling as they build the energy for the burst of the chorus. Through the lyrics, he draws you into the elation of love and the feeling that it could make you do anything. The lack of inhibitions edges into your senses, but is soothed by the joyful feelings that flood your senses.

If the single on its own doesn’t have you dizzy with love and dancing around, the music video just might. The video uses a really engaging visual of Chan singing against a white background. This is interspersed with him singing in a room with vertigo-inducing geometrics swirling around him. It is a fun music video that has a delightfully youthful feeling. The spinning of the visuals and the shivering geometrics fill you with the dizzying sensation of being in love.

Jeffrey Chan fills your chest with the bubbling euphoria and dizzying feeling of being willing to do anything for love through ‘Vertigo’. The single has a retro touch that is tempered by the youthful feeling of modernity that Chan brings. From start to finish, the single is engaging and a lot of fun to listen to.
