Ruiz! – Falling (2022)

With his singles ‘Please Baby Please’ and ‘5 Seconds’, Ruiz! has shown us that he is not caged by a single genre or musical style. He is now bringing a raw energy to his sound in ‘Falling’, which urges us to get out into the world and start chasing our dreams. Packing a powerful punch, the single is all about seizing the day, which is something that many of us have lost the will for since the start of the pandemic.

While the single gives you the boost you need to chase your dreams, it also furthers the genre-defying sound Ruiz! has been cultivating. Using some retro post-punk tones, he infuses a dash of new wave and indie rock into his sound. Continuing his modern take on all things in life, the single is easy to connect with and packed with contagious vibes that will have you diving into his back catalogue.

The vocals that open ‘Falling’ call out with an almost choral touch to them. From below this opening line, there is an electronic-tinged vocal line that makes an appearance, only to disappear into nothing. There is a retro vibe to the vocal performance that makes you think of tracks from the peak of new wave. While there is a nostalgic edge to the delivery of the vocals, the lyrics have a push in them that makes you want to get out and chase the dreams you put on hold. The vocals are interesting, as they have a marching delivery that moves into a slowing melodic vibe, only to gain extra texture as that electronic-tinged vocal line comes in and out. There is a lot that we can all connect with in the lyrics that get us thinking about our current situation and what we can do to overcome the rut many of us have fallen into.

Resting beneath the vocals is a melody that enhances the retro vibes of the vocal delivery. The shimmering electronic tones have a real 80s feeling to them, but this is tempered with a modern edge. You can feel the tendrils of the past woven into the sound, only to be overtaken by something that pushes you toward the future. At times, there is this warbling chitter to the melody that shakes you up. Below all of this is a beat that has you gently bouncing to the rhythm before the strummed tones add a splash of something organic to the track.

Ruiz! merges retro and modern while urging us to get out there and chase our dreams in the eclectic sound of ‘Falling’. The vocals form the main line of the single with an almost choral opening that gives way to a marching delivery enhanced by electronic textures. The melody has a retro vibe that is tinged with modernity that really gets you gently bouncing to the beat.
