Helen – Morals (2022)

Helen is no stranger to The Other Side Reviews and we are no strangers to the genre-defying sound she has come to perfect. Each of her releases brings a new sound, leaving you excited for the next. With her single ‘Morals’, she is diverting from the pop-funk of her last releases and heading into conflicting emotions set to a pop and RnB fusion.

Looking at being blindly in love, the single considers how close feelings of love and lust actually are and how this affects how we view situations. Inspired by a talk she had with a friend, she first formed the main bass sample and the rest of the single found its own way out. Touching on some early 2000s sounds, she continues her versatile style that offers a unique edge to her sound.

‘Morals’ has a deep twang that grabs your hand and leads you into the rippling RnB tones of the melody. There is a wonderful fusion of pulsing pop tones and smooth slides of RnB in the melody. These melodic elements combine to get you swaying and shimmying to the rhythm before the beats have you bopping away to the sound. The electronic pulses add a wonderful flair of texture to the melody that is really rich in its smoothness. You can’t help but move as you listen to the melody, while the vocals bring a whole new dimension to the track.

While the melody highlights Helen’s diverse musicality, the vocals take this versatility to another level. Her voice has a smoothness that brings the conflicting emotions of the lyrics to life wonderfully. There is a catchiness to her performance that allows the emotions and contemplation of the lyrics to sink into your brain, without you even realising. Her delivery takes the movement of the melody and injects it directly into your muscles. Through the lyrics, she considers the hit of lust or love that you feel for someone and the feeling of losing your mind to the blind affection you feel. It is an interesting contemplation that has been made so easy to sink into through the engaging flow of her music.

Helen taps into 2000s RnB and pop for the bounce of ‘Morals’ as the lyrics consider the conflicting feelings of being blindly in love. The melody has you shimmying and swaying to the rhythm as it perfectly blends pop and RnB. Her vocals are smooth as she contemplates love, lust and a loss of morals.
