9 o’clock Nasty – Food On The Floor (2022)
It goes without saying that as soon as UK-based trio 9 o’clock Nasty have new material the chances are we’ll review it. I probably shouldn’t have favourites, but I have to admit that these lads are up there with My Chemical Romance and Radiohead when it comes to my playlists. Sorry lads, but not Chicago – no band will ever be greater than Chicago. Anyway, let’s move on to 9 o’clock Nasty’s single ‘Food on the Floor’.
Following their track ‘Playboy Driver’, the eclectic punk rock group adopt an old-school punk sound with ‘Food on the Floor’. Unlike ‘Playboy Driver’ which saw a divergence from their typical sound with classic rock tones, ‘Food on the Floor’ sees 9 o’clock Nasty return to what they are known for – brash, bold punk. Upbeat with a toe-tapping vibe, the single lifts your heart and has you jumping around the room. In fact, the melodic arrangement can have you skipping about then doing some cartwheels – it’s a hell of a workout that I actually enjoy.
Along with the upbeat melody, the gruff vocal execution adds a grittiness to the cheery tune. Yet, while the song has a lightness to it the backstory to ‘Food on the Floor’ might be a little obscure. Penned to commemorate a fight where food went flying all over the place, ‘Food on the Floor’ does not have any underlying agendas, it’s just what it says on the label. The band share that “…sometimes our songs weren’t exactly about the things we say they are…but this one really is about exactly what we say it is. There was a funeral. There was a fight. The food went all over the floor. We ate it. Our friend was dead, and it is exactly what he would have wanted.”
Gradually refining their sound and honing something eclectically awesome, 9 o’clock Nasty are true artists. Frenzied, bold and encapsulating the madness within all of us, the talented trio won my heart a long time ago and is yet to disappoint. ‘Food on the Floor’ is merely another slap in the face with a tequila chaser and tons of squashed pork pies to go ‘round.
