Electric Conzertration – St Pauli Drift (2022)

Through the sound of ‘St Pauli Drift’, Electric Conzertration brings dancing electronic tones to the art-rock power of live instrumentation. Adding a splash of disco, lo-fi guitar and soft rock, the band takes us on an interesting instrumental journey. With a sound that keeps you on your toes, they blend natural and electronic signatures for a dynamic arrangement that is hard to categorise.

Jasper Johannsen and Victor Oswalt have been jamming together since 2015 and started to focus on this musical project in 2018. Since then, they have been mixing dry beats with some serious cosmic instrumental harmonies, for a sound that comes straight out of left field. Sticking to a small number of instruments, they showcase what each can do and how to masterfully combine them.

The light pulses that open ‘St Pauli Drift’ have you gently bopping to their movement. These tones carry you into the captivating beats that have a wonderful dryness to them. They lightly push you down the melody, while getting you skipping along to their sound. The cymbals add a great upper layer to the beats, making you want to move to their sound. The low levels of the track are addictive as they hook you to the sound and keep you swaying or bopping. As the single progresses, they retain their steady pace, but a new line rises from below them adding a new dimension to the sound. While there is a subdued feeling to the dance vibes at times, there is no denying that this is a melody that gets you moving.

As the low levels get you moving through the melody, the higher levels are packed with soft lo-fi guitars that tickle your brain. There is a slight haziness to the top layer when the single starts, that brings a wash of pastel colours to the sky. The merger of different styles through the single makes it hard to categorise, but this actually enhances the overall enjoyment of the track. Through the top layers of the single, you can relax and sink into the overall movement. The music is like drops of rain pattering into a pond or the smell of rain hitting hot asphalt. There is something about it that you can’t get enough of.

Through the instrumental tones of ‘St Pauli Drift’, Electric Conzertration has you moving to the rhythm, while sinking back into the higher tones. The low levels of the melody have you moving to their rhythm, while the upper levels are a relaxing touch. Together, the melodic lines form an addictive flow that you can’t help but sink into.
