Track of the Day: Moonlight Thief – Come Home

If Alanis Morrissette were to have a child with Amanda Palmer but it was raised by Courteney Love, the chances are Moonlight Thief would be it. Drawing together the intimacy of blues and indie-folk with the power of alternative rock, the Germany-based duo easily hypnotises audiences. Featured on Punk Rocker, YMX, Pop Fad Blog, Edgar Allan Poets, Less Than 1000 Followers and various playlists/online radio streams, Moonlight Thief is reaching people on an international level. The latest addition to their discography is ‘Come Home’.

Following their well-received track ‘My Unrequited Love’, the newly founded band is establishing a unique sound on the unsigned rock music scene. Yes, comparisons can be made to Alanis Morrissette when speaking about Emily Küpers’ vocals; however, there is an edginess to the execution that makes the music intriguing. Combining dynamic guitars, pounding drums and Küpers dulcet tones, Moonlight Thief showcase its musicality with the melodic arrangement. Yet, while the song is electric guitar-driven, the incorporation of acoustic guitar demonstrates the band’s eclecticism finding a balance between sonic and organic elements.

As I mentioned, Moonlight Thief is a newly founded act formed as part of a school project in 2021. Yet, while there is an innocent naivety in their youth, Emily Küpers and Alexander Almering demonstrate sophisticated maturity in their music. Self-produced and recorded in their home studio, ‘Come Home’ has a gritty tone within the smoother soundscape. Considering the themes of sorrow, regret and anxiety in the song, it makes sense that there is this complexity in sound and style.

While ‘Come Home’ focuses on a past relationship in a melancholic way, Moonlight Thief also want to push a positive agenda in the track. The band share that there is a “wish to turn back the clock in order to start anew…” which might invoke despair; however, the pair push for a hopefulness that “…it [the relationship] can be fixed again.” A light at the end of that proverbial tunnel if you will.

This is my introduction to Moonlight Thief, and I am so glad I came across the pair. Filled with sincerity, genuineness and sentimentality, ‘Come Home’ will be going on my personal playlist immediately after I finish this review.
