Elina Filice – Don’t Let Me Fall (2022)
Known for her engaging, soulful and genre-defying sound, Canadian artist Elina Filice is something special. The founder of Red Vine Records, Filice works extensively in the music industry and utilises music as a tool for queer rights advocacy. We have been following this young lady for the past two years featuring her tracks ‘Let’s Get Lost’ and ‘Lying’. Now, we delve into her latest release ‘Don’t Let Me Fall’. Come with us.
Following her well-received track ‘The Reason’, ‘Don’t Let Me Fall’ adopts a more upbeat and buoyant approach. Merging her soulful vocals with a contemporary pop sound, the track dips into a kaleidoscopic soundscape with ease. What I find intriguing about ‘Don’t Let Me Fall’ is the fusion of various genres in intriguing movements. Yes, the track might be considered pop with its toe-tapping nature; however, the hints of soul, funk and indie rock enhance Filice’s eclecticism.
Despite being an energetic, high-paced single, Filice showcases depth with the juxtaposition of melancholic themes and jovial melodies. Dark lyrics touch on the theme of desperate mental health, spiralling depression, and the pressure of having to care for someone in this situation. Filice explains that “we’ve all been in the situation or know someone who’s been in a relationship or friendship where someone is relying on you for their stability. It’s incredibly scary being stuck in a dark tango with someone who you care for but are unable to help.”
Written, recorded and co-produced by Filice, ‘Don’t Let Me Fall’ is an intricate representation of human fragility and vulnerability. The song may have you dancing and twirling about, but when you take a deeper look, it holds greater complexity. It is this depth that makes Filice hard-hitting, bold and anthemic.
