Track of the Day: Anton Lewis – Hollywood Smile

After seeing Muse perform in Manchester, a 14-year-old Anton Lewis was desperate to start playing the guitar and that’s just what he did. After performing in a plethora of failed groups, he chose to embrace a solo career at age 18. Since then, he has continued to create and release music. Featuring on BBC Introducing, Indie Dock Music Blog, Roadie Music and many playlists, Lewis has gained critical acclaim across the globe. The latest addition to his discography is the single ‘Hollywood Smile’.

Inspired by the likes of The Strokes, Nick Cave, Arctic Monkeys, The Wombats and Foals, Anton Lewis’ sound is a fusion of post-punk, indie-pop and indie-rock. A genre-bending artist, Lewis shows he is by no means to be pigeon-holed. With his single ‘Hollywood Smile’, the UK-based multi-instrumentalist combines dynamic guitars and pounding drums. The melodic arrangement has a grittiness to it; however, it also presents with a mellow, flowing quality within its obscurity.

His first release in 2022, Anton Lewis burst into this year with a confident bash. Unlike the previous single ‘Liverpool’, ‘Hollywood Smile’ moves from a laidback, melancholic sound to a toe-tapping vibe. As I mentioned, there is a grittiness in this hard-hitting single that, interestingly enough, both aligns and does not align with the lyrical content. Lewis explains that ‘Hollywood Smile’ is “…about getting away from the world and its problems for five minutes, getting out of your own head and taking a step back to enjoy the simple things in life.” Seemingly melancholic but with a jovial theme, Lewis highlights his innovativeness as an artist.

In addition to the single, Anton Lewis released an official music video for ‘Hollywood Smile’. You can view it below or on his YouTube channel.
