Perry Ripley – Cocaine Love (2022)

Through his single ‘The Storm’, Perry Ripley brought the understanding that the hardships we face in life are what make us who we are today. While his last release touched on addiction and mental health problems, he is taking things further with ‘Cocaine Love’. Delving deeper into the struggle of addiction, he considers how similar addiction can feel to love.

Using moody, raw and thought-provoking sounds, he looks at how quickly a seemingly innocent lifestyle can turn into something darker, unexpected and life-changing. This transition of lifestyle is brought to visual glory through the accompanying music video which uses metaphoric symbolism to portray this spiralling journey. The title track off his upcoming EP, this single furthers his balance of alternative rock and electronic pop.

‘Cocaine Love’ has a decadent guitar line that calls to your soul and lures you into the single. The seductive blues tones of the guitar line makes you want to close your eyes and soak up its sultry vibes. Once the guitar has completely hooked you, the beats push through and propel you into a waltzing sound. The seduction of the opening line continues gaining a richness, the longer it has to wrap around you. Electronic touches start to rise through the melody on the chorus, bringing a darker and more ominous touch to the track. It is an undeniably rich melody that uses touches of electronic pop to enhance the seductive movement of the blues guitar and beckons you further into the underground of the sound. There is no way that you can deny the call of the music and you honestly don’t want to.

It is not only the music that is seductive, as Ripley’s vocals croon against the guitar line. There is a silken feeling to his performance as he uses wonderful imagery to bring the broken feeling people have and the struggle against addiction to life. As the chorus hits, his voice calls to your soul with a layered approach before the electronic edging shakes things up. This electronic tone to the performance is jarring against the overall smoothness of the track, which perfectly creates the dark hold addiction has on people. While the lyrics delve into addiction, there is a secondary message to the track. This is woven into the performance and tells the story of falling into a consuming relationship.

Perry Ripley slides into your senses with a bluesy seduction that offers an electronic tinge, that inundates your soul in ‘Cocaine Love’. The melody is packed with rich sounds and a sprinkling of electronic notes that enhances the seduction of the melody. His crooning vocals draw you further into the layered tale that looks at addiction and falling into a consuming relationship.
