Track of the Day: Youth Illusion – Help Me To Believe
Listening to Youth Illusion and their latest single ‘Help Me To Believe’, we can paraphrase that old saying “rock ’n’ roll is here to stay” into “hard rock (’n’ roll) is here to stay”.
Since the late 60s when guitar giants like Jimi Hendrix changed the way electric guitar sounded in music, there have been many changes in what fell under the category of hard (guitar) rock. With their new single, this multinational and multicultural band seem to be covering almost every aspect of hard rock there is – from the classics like Deep Purple and then, later on, AC/DC and Guns n Roses, to grunge purveyors like Pearl Jam and punk-ish exponents like The Offspring – Youth Illusion make no illusions but do it the hard way. Literally. Yet, the key here is that Youth Illusion doesn’t just go through a set of riffs, but comes up with a very strong melody line to build their guitar sound around, making ‘Help Me To Believe’ quite believable.
In many ways, this multi-faceted inspiration should come as no surprise, since the members of the band come from Italy, South Africa, the US, and the UK, and it seems that each member brought along his personal (hard) rock faves. Yet, instead of turning the song into just a combination of different and disparate influences, they seem to have blended them all together seamlessly into something that could be called modern hard rock.
‘Help Me To Believe’ is actually the leading single from the band’s latest EP, aptly titled Seeking Answers In Silence. Judging by the single, it seems that Youth Illusion has found their answers in the loud but very melodic sound of their guitars.
