Rachel Hill – Ice Cubes (2022)

Influenced by the likes of Birdy, Joni Mitchell, Julien Baker, Phoebe Bridgers and Billie Eilish, UK-based Rachel Hill merges diverse genres in her boundary-breaking music. Singing for almost as long as she has been speaking, Rachel has an innate passion for music and brings that to her audience. While this is my introduction to the songstress, Rachel Hill has a reputation as a live performer in London. She has also featured on notable blogs like FV Music Blog, We Write About Music, York Calling and many more. The latest addition to her critically acclaimed discography is ‘Ice Cubes’.

The first release since her five-track EP Through Rain Or Snow in 2020, ‘Ice Cubes’ is a wistful folk-inspired serenade. Adopting an acoustic arrangement, Rachel Hill showcases the beauty of a minimalistic approach. Yet, despite the simplistic style, ‘Ice Cubes’ has a kaleidoscopic sound sending a whirl of bright colours flitting through the air.

Produced with Vittorio Tondo at Tileyard, London, ‘Ice Cubes’ harmonically melds the soft melody with Rachel’s enchanting vocals. Trained as a classical soprano, there is a clarity in her tones that truly grabs your attention. Not haunting, but somewhat surreal, the rich vocals send chills down your spine while the piano lifts your soul.

Reminiscent of Joni Mitchell in her profound lyricism, Rachel Hill showcases depth and intimacy in ‘Ice Cubes’. Amusing at first listen, she connects with listeners using relatable and modern-day experiences in her narrative. Yet, as I hit the repeat button, I discover the profoundness, thought-provoking poignancy of the track. Moreover, it touches on issues of mental health which is so important in today’s uncertain society.

Described as witty, catchy and deeply personal, Rachel Hill’s music hits a nerve and can leave you gasping for breath, but in a good way. I can’t wait for more from this artist as she is definitely one to watch!
