Luhan Si Hadin – Hollow (2022)

The search for identity is something that most of us have gone through at some point, but the journey is fraught with danger. Luhan Si Hadin considers the self-destructive tendencies that many people fall into as they try to find their identity in ‘Hollow’. Using a dark pop tone, their exploration of self-destruction delves deep into negativity, while offering the glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel.

The single is a delightfully dark taster for their upcoming EP Negativity. Having worked through their own identity crisis, Luhan Si Hadin embraced their fears and turned them into something that offers a helping hand to others. Creating the perfect soundscape to an identity crisis, they fuse classical orchestral movements with soaring synths for a nerdcore sound, quite unlike anything else you might listen to.

‘Hollow’ breathes against the back of your neck with a dark and slightly ominous movement. The orchestral tones lightly wash the higher levels of the soundscape at this point. When the beats tap against the back of your head, the strings bring a dramatic flair to the melody. There is a slight sense of panic and being hunted that comes through the orchestral tones. The beats leave a stark and desolate soundscape in their wake, that makes the flairs of the strings more powerful. It is a very moving melody that pulls you into a dark netherworld that traps you in the negativity of self-destruction. Later in the track, the music drops, leaving only a delicate piano line that beautifully twinkles against the vocals.

As the orchestral tones come into the single, Luhan Si Hadin’s vocals slide into your brain. Their voice is like smoke as it twirls around your head bringing the burnt scent of self-destruction, but remaining out of your grasp. This intangibility of their voice is like thoughts and emotions that stab through your brain and chest when you least expect it. There is a powerful draw to their performance that keeps you trapped in the spiral of the lyrics. The lyrics are packed with the darkness we have inside us that can easily spill into the rest of our lives. After the music drops, their vocals send shivers down your spine as the warning for the lyrics creep along your senses. While there seems to be no light in the endless dark spiral, the single ends with the question that can put you on a brighter path.

Luhan Si Hadin draws you into an addictive and smoky dark spiral of self-destruction and search for identity in ‘Hollow’. The music has a dark and ominous movement that is enhanced by orchestral flairs. Their vocals slide into the single, bringing the thoughts and emotions of this spiral to an end with an extremely important question.
