Benjamin David – Temporary Lovers (2022)

With his debut single ‘Temporary Lovers’, Benjamin David is delving into the pain of losing someone and the challenges you face moving on. Inspired by personal loss and the struggles he saw his family members go through, he pulls us all into an experience that many have faced over the past few years. An anthemic soul-rock eulogy to those we have all lost and the challenging path we face moving on in life without them, the single is truly powerful.

While this is his debut single, David grew up in a family of musicians and started recording demos at the age of 11. He went on to study at The BRIT School before he began performing in London clubs, including The Half Moon and The Bedford. With more music to come throughout the year, this track not only introduces his sound, but gets you eager for more.

‘Temporary Lovers’ draws you in with a delicate piano line. The movement of the piano line leads you into the rock guitars that call out into the soundscape. There is a wonderful layering of the piano and guitar that pushes through your brain. It is a moving melody that keeps you engaged and moving through the soundscape while enhancing the vocals. The beats that come in later clap against the back of your head, adding an interesting texture to the music. The soar of the guitars brings the anthemic feeling to the melody and lightly tugs at your emotions.

While the melody easily forms the moving foundation of the single, it is the vocals that really make the track. David’s performance brings the sadness of the single through the opening verse. There is a profound sadness in his performance as he feels the cold tendrils of loss. This leads to the chorus that tries to move on from the loss while retaining the love and affection. His voice has the lightest scratch to it that makes the moments of soaring pain touching and beautiful. There are some really interesting thoughts woven into the lyrics that are rather easy to connect with. Later in the track, his performance drops for a whispered confession.

Benjamin David dives into the pain of loss and the challenge of moving forward with life while retaining the love you felt for someone in ‘Temporary Lovers’. The melody is powerful as it layers piano and guitar for an epic and rather anthemic movement. It is the vocals that really make the single as David brings the pain of loss and the fight to hold onto emotions even as you make your way through life without the person you lost.
