The Tell Alls – Modern Day Mother Teresa (2022)
The solo project of multi-instrumentalist Kenny Buono, The Tell Alls draws together elements of folk, indie-pop and power-pop in his unique style. Already a veteran musician, US-based Buono has performed in bands like Flight of Mavis, Buzz Zeemer, Grand and the Trolleyvox, and supported acts like Goo Goo Dolls, Sinead O’Connor and Spin Doctors. Inspired by acts like Tom Petty and The Beatles, Buono began releasing original material as a solo artist in 2006; however, he only hit our virtual desk last year with ‘Pace The Pesos’. We’re here to discuss the latest single to his critically acclaimed discography ‘Modern Day Mother Teresa’.
Following ‘Pace The Pesos’ (read our review here), ‘Modern Day Mother Teresa’ adopts a more folk-driven style than the previous pop sound. Using an acoustic guitar and drums, Buono showcases the beauty of simplicity in this engaging track. An interspersed piano adds lightness to the melody while backing vocals increase etherealness with the woo’s and ooo’s. A light-hearted melody that can easily make you grin, ‘Modern Day Mother Teresa’ has a joviality to it aligning with the poignant theme. This is what I find interesting: there is a flit-of-the-hand whimsy in the track while retaining serious, powerful lyrical content.
A self-recorded and produced single, ‘Modern Day Mother Teresa’ touches on existential truths and life in this uncertain period. A tribute to the healthcare workers who continue to work during the Covid-19 pandemic, the track is warm, tender and sincere. Buono shares that the song “was written in an attempt to immortalise these heroic, selfless professionals who bravely took everything that a global pandemic could throw at them.”
A warm song filled with reflective, nostalgic and raw honesty, ‘Modern Day Mother Teresa’ seems to ooze sentimental genuineness in the elegant melody. I’m not the greatest fan of folk music but this song just captures your heart and soul from the first chord. I couldn’t think of a better tribute song for these admirable healthcare workers.
