SCREENTALK – Escape (2022)

When night comes and the world starts to darken, there are a lot of things that seem to creep out into the world making us feel unsafe. These things have been picked up by SCREENTALK for their single ‘Escape’. While based on an old idea the band had, the single has been rebuilt around a funky bassline with a blast of synths and melodic guitar lines.

Deciding they wanted to record this single instead of the song they planned for the day, their faith in the catchy bassline has really paid off. Sean Currie (vocals), Sam Varney (guitar), Stuart McNaughton (keys, synths), Gianpaolo Carnevali (bass) and Dan Moore (drums) are riding the waves of their last year’s successes that had The Guide Liverpool naming them in the list of Merseyside musicians you need to hear. With this song being eagerly anticipated, it is well worth the wait.

The catchy and groovy bassline of ‘Escape’ grabs your attention from the first moment and gets your head bopping. There is something infectious about that bassline as it steadily thrums through your brain and leaves dark vibrations in the back of your brain. This enhances the dark feeling of the single as night falls over the vocals. The steady thrum is covered with a twanging note that brings a creeping tension to your shoulders like someone is behind you and staring. Everything changes for the chorus that has an expansive feeling to it. It is like the music bursts into a thousand shards for the chorus to let the vocals really shine.

As the bassline grabs your attention, a humming and hazy vocal line flashes with neon lights. Currie’s vocals rise from between the melodic notes for an eerie feeling that sets the hairs on the back of your neck on edge. He effortlessly brings that feeling of hyper-awareness that comes when you are outside at night. His voice flies on the chorus as he considers how these thoughts only come at certain times. There is a wonderful contrast between the verses and chorus that adds this amazing movement to the single. Through all of this, the vocals have a really catchy vibe to them that gets you singing along to the chorus.

SCREENTALK fill you with the tension of a late-night walk while getting you hooked to a groovy bassline in the infectious ‘Escape’. The music brings the dark tension that comes with the night and all the things that scare you in the dark. This is picked up by the vocal performance through the verses only for a catchy flying movement to take over the chorus.
