When ‘Airy Met Fairy – Until The Season Dries (2018)

The Nordic duo, When ‘Airy Met Fairy, recently released a new track titled ‘Until Your Season Dries’.  The pair formed in 2015 and consist of Thorunn Egilsdottir and Mike Koster.  They have since been self-producing their music and are set to release their debut album, Glow, in July.

‘Until Your Season Dries’ is a song dedicated to the father of Thorunn’s child and how their breakup affected her.  She sings about love being similar to being thrown off a lifeboat which, to me, is about giving up on the romance and walking away.  The terrible heartache that comes with that is felt but played down, which I think is the intended purpose.  It paints a painful scene through the tone, but the duo has used this as a way for making it seem light and fluffy, almost like it’s a breakup I’d want to go through.

The voice of Thorunn in ‘Until Your Season Dies’ is gentle and angelic, creating a poetic and peaceful atmosphere around the song.  She is about to portray her sadness through her voice, often breaking and often shaking.  She has a ‘Sunday morning’ attitude about the way she sings, like you could lay in bed all day and listen to her voice.

In the song, she performs in a way that carries the instruments and the lyrics right to your ears and makes you listen to what she has to say.  The instrumentals are supportive of the vocals and don’t try to overtake them.  They are played as gently as Thorunn sings, and as the song progresses, both vocals and instruments progress together.  The duo creates the song in perfect harmony and unity.  They have a way of making you feel relaxed, and I can’t wait to hear what the rest of the album has to offer.
