Flashback One – Broken (2022)

When faced with something as beautiful as the orange glow of sunset, many of us feel the urge to share it with someone we care about. This is exactly what Flashback One brings to his single ‘Broken’. The pulsing bass and electronic pop tones of the single breaks through a wish for someone to love, share a life with and enjoy the beauty the world has to offer, together.

Inspired by a sunset he saw from the balcony of his holiday apartment, Flashback One pours his dance energy into a sense of longing. A long-time producer, he recently switched the style he works with, and moved into future pop with an edge of future bass. The pumping tones are incredibly catchy and make you want to move, while bringing the depths of the emotions to your soul.

‘Broken’ grabs your attention with gentle popping tones and an electronic warble. Clicking tones bring a new texture to the golden glow of the opening. As the beats make an appearance they chitter their way into your brain getting your head to lightly bop to the sound. This turns into a serious dance wash of the jittering colours and future bass tones. The jittering tones of the music drops when the verses hit again, creating a delightful rise and fall. Through all this, the music sweeps through you and leaves a glowing light in its place.

The vocals are as gentle and glowing as the opening melodic tones. The female vocals have a golden glitter to them as they reach out with a mix of hope and longing. Through the performance, you can feel the yearning for someone to share the beauty of life with. This is tempered by a fear of hurt that can come when you open yourself to other people. The delicate touches of the vocal performance lift something from your chest and makes you feel light even when the hurt seems to linger in the soundscape. The electronic edged vocals that come through later in the track are an interesting addition that enhances the single.

Flashback One moves from gentle longing to jittering future bass as he fills your senses with the golden light of ‘Broken’. The music rises and falls through tender moments and driving electronic tones. The female vocals are delicate as they invoke the emotions of the track and fill you with longing, love, hope and the fear of being hurt.
