Kimerica – Not Anymore (2022)

Kimerica turned darkness into the glittering threads of new light with her single ‘Coro Per La Fine Del Mondo’. Now, she is taking us on a trip through the feeling of disillusionment that comes at the end of a toxic relationship. Continuing her bilingual flows, she moves between English and Italian while dropping you into the moment when the spell of the relationship is broken and you see the light.

This moment of clarity is tempered with the knowledge that the light at the end of the tunnel is still a distance away. Swirling through disturbing elements, conversational vocals and distorted tones rests a mantra of self-affirmation that can help you get through the moment. The amazingly creative and imaginative style of Kimerica is on full display with this track.

‘Not Anymore’ vibrates through you with a slightly experimental tone. There is a very avant-grade vibe to the music that is also quite seductive. There is a richness to the music that draws you into the shadowy underworld of the track. The plucked tones run up your spine with a sense of caution and the dawning of understanding the danger of the situation you are in. The melody has a really interesting movement that is both melodic in its flow and like each melodic line is coming from a different direction. The piano has a scared tone like it is scared to become louder. The scratch of tones that comes in the second half of the track introduces the deep drone that furthers the eclectic tones of the track. Through all of this, there is a feeling like you are moving toward the glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel.

The vocals are as avant-garde as the music from the whispered opening verse. From the first word, you are drawn into the moment when you realise you need to get out of a toxic relationship. While there is this knowledge, it is darkened by a fear of what can happen if you remain in a situation that you don’t trust. These moments are in English and really send shivers running down your skin. Halfway through the single, the language of the vocals changes to Italian which brings a new edge to the track. There is a push to the vocals as they change language, which is enhanced by the distortion and fracturing of the sound.

Kimerica drops you into the moment that you realise the darkness of a toxic relationship through the bilingual tones of ‘Not Anymore’. The seductive yet avant-garde tones of the melody beckon you into the soundscape. The vocals are cautions while moving toward the light at the end of the tunnel.
